SB 10 (creating the Texas MENTAL Health Care Consortium) is the wrong solution to “school safety”

LOW income / LOW information families will be hurt, first.

Here’s just a handful of reasons to OPPOSE the DOZENS of mental health bills in Austin that want to involve our local school campuses, which is code for expanding the market share for the government-supported pharmaceutical companies, by creating a direct avenue for them to perform mental assessments on our children, AT SCHOOL.

Whether it’s through research funding, consulting positions for faculty, or “educational” dollars, drug companies have a major influence on our medical schools.

1992 Congressional Hearing: TX Sen Moncrief – “Hospitals would go into schools and initiate kickbacks to counselors who could find students that had mental health insurance and would then be put into that hospital.https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=umn.31951d00282733c;view=1up;seq=9

“…social workers, school counselors, probation officers, crisis hotline workers and even ministers were paid to refer patients to private psychiatric hospitals. These are people we have all been taught to trust, not avoid.” https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=umn.31951d00282733c;view=1up;seq=9

Think of SB10 as a “red flag” law for your children.
Instead of losing their guns, they’ll be labeled.  Some will be shunted off to alternative educational placements, or psychiatric hospitals.

Some parents, who choose to seek alternatives or refuse to drug their children, may find Child Protective Services at their door. Schools are already the second highest reporter to CPS in our state. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2fyHlh8YSk

Children with special needs may be more vulnerable. In Florida, autistic children as young as 7 have been removed from school in handcuffs, and taken to psych hospitals.

The large body of research indicates that, even under the best of conditions, psychiatric predictions of long-term future dangerousness are wrong in at least two out of every three cases. – American Psychiatric Association, Amicus Brief- Barefoot v Estelle https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/463/880/

Ironically, while “mental illness” does not cause violence, there’s a strong link between violence and mind-altering substances.  That’s what psychotropic drugs are.  They alter mood, cognition, and behavior, just like any drug on the street.  Researchers examined FDA adverse event reports and found that psychiatric drugs were disproportionately associated with violence. https://www.cchrint.org/pdfs/violence-report.pdf

Examples of mass violence UNDER the INFLUENCE include Kendrex White (UT stabber), Devin Patrick Kelley (Sutherland Springs), Stephen Paddock (Vegas), James Holmes (Aurora), Eric Harris (Columbine), and many others. MORE drugs are NOT the solution.

SB10 puts tele-psychiatry programs in the hands of our state’s medical schools; specifically the psychiatry departments.  Psychiatry is about drugs, devices, and the medical model. STOP DRUGGING OUR CHILDREN!!

TexasTech’s “TWITR” Project shares data with school officials (consultants & 3rd-party vendors that offer online programs or software).  ANYONE with “a legitimate educational interest”can gain access to the data.  https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2004/privacy/section_4b.asp

“TWITR” and “TEEN SCREEN” are dangerously FLAWED and lead to over-labeling and over-medicating of children.

SB10 has the potential to label every child in a public school with a mental health or intellectual disability score (violation of privacy)

TEA says “If you decide not to have your child evaluated, the school district can disagree with your decision.” “The school can use its right to get permission for the evaluation from the TEA.

Those who will suffer first are LOW INCOME families, taking advantage of “FREE” health assessments for children AT school.  Schools are the 2nd largest client for CPS.  Austin ISD Police called CPS 875 times Sep-Dec ‘2018 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2fyHlh8YSk

  • Parents don’t want tele-psychiatry in our schools.
  • Parents don’t want our kids screened for “behavioral” research.
  • You can keep the TWITR project out of Texas public schools.
SB10 is scheduled for House committee hearing WEDNESDAY MAY 1st.

From my friend, Kurt Hyde…

SB 10 is very dangerous for a number of reasons. For example, this sort of legislation has been used to do an end-around on second amendment rights in California. When one member of household is viewed as depressed or taking certain medications, they match-up the medical database with the gun registration database and question if other members of the household, if they are registered firearms owners, should be allowed to possess firearms.
